One of the frequent questions about acne is: ‘’is there a link between acne and a healthy diet?’’. Well, for long years, people thought that there was no link between diet and acne and that diet has no effect upon acne, active or positive! Actually, this belief is a wrong one! Recent studies showed that there is a very strong link between the acne development and diet.

The metabolic changes in insulin and glucose as result of diet result in changes at the level of skin, aggravating, for those who suffer from this, the existing acne. Researchers believe that the severity of acne and the development of breakouts might be influenced by the carbohydrates that have a high glycemic index, causing glucose and the insulin levels to spike! However, a diet that is rich in protein and in carbohydrates that have a low glycemic index will improve the acne and prevent often breakouts.

One of the studies that were trying to find the link between acne and diet was performed by Professor Mann, who formed two different groups of males aged between 15 and 25. One of the groups received pasta, grain bread and vegetables, as these foods are categorized as low glycemic index, while the other group received snacks, potatoes, sugary drinks and white bread. After just 12 weeks, the results were absolutely astonishing: the boys who were in the group that received vegetables, grain bread and pasta showed no less that a 50% reduction of acne development. The result suggests the fact that there is a link between acne and diet and that the link is a very strong one!

The link doesn’t mean that if you follow a healthy diet program, you will have the chance to have acne free skin, but it means that you can reduce the number of breakouts and that their severity won’t be on the same, high level, but lower! Stop eating highly processed foods and try to incorporate the whole grains in your meals such as oatmeal, brown rice, wheat bread and wheat pastas, but also try to include as many fresh vegetables and fruit as possible!

The soda, the chips, the chocolate and other snacks should be avoided. There is nothing to lose if you try a healthy diet! In fact, your body will have a lot to win and you will even feel an overall improvement of your health! I think that you should understand the fact that we have to take care of our bodies, even though you are an adolescent and the temptations are numerous! Nobody tells you to stop enjoying the small surprises of life such as the taste of the ‘’junk food’’, but try to limit it!
